What Does NHS Dental Care Cover?
NHS dentistry is focused on clinically necessary treatments to maintain good oral health, prevent disease, and relieve pain.
✔ Routine Check-Ups & Oral Health Assessments – Regular examinations to identify and prevent potential issues.
✔ Fillings, Extractions & Preventative Care – Restoring and protecting teeth from further decay or damage.
✔ Gum Disease Treatment – Professional cleaning and advice to maintain healthy gums.
✔ Root Canal Treatment – To save an infected tooth when medically required.
✔ Crowns, Bridges & Dentures – Restorations for missing or damaged teeth where necessary.
📌 Cosmetic treatments (e.g., whitening, veneers, and cosmetic orthodontics) are not covered under NHS care but are available as private treatment options.
NHS Dental Bands & Fees
NHS treatment costs are set nationally and fall into three bands:
🦷 Band 1 – £25.80
✔ Examination, diagnosis, and advice
✔ X-rays if needed
✔ Routine cleaning (if clinically necessary)
✔ Preventative care such as fluoride application
🦷 Band 2 – £70.70
✔ All treatments from Band 1
✔ Fillings, extractions, and root canal treatment
🦷 Band 3 – £306.80
✔ All treatments from Band 1 & 2
✔ More complex procedures such as crowns, dentures, and bridges
NHS dental fees are reviewed annually by the government. Some patients may be eligible for free NHS dental treatment.
Who is Eligible for Free NHS Dental Treatment?
You may qualify for free NHS dental care if you are:
✔ Under 18 (or under 19 and in full-time education)
✔ Pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months
✔ Receiving certain benefits, including Income Support or Universal Credit
✔ Holding a valid NHS HC2 certificate
